Why does an earthquake occur?
The earth's surface consists of 7 plates, these are known as tectonic plates. The pressure increase from shifting of these plates can cause the crust to break. This break allows stress to be released as energy, which moves through the earth in the form of waves (aka earthquakes).
There are two methods by which structures can be made quake-proof:
- Use the seismic device to absorb/transfer disturbances.
- Tie the walls, floor, roof, and foundations into a rigid box that holds together when shaken by a quake.
Further explanation!
So, Method 1 uses seismic devices, including base isolators as shown in the video. In this episode, we will be using Method 2 to design and build our shake-proof structure.
